Back in November my uncle Kevin got in touch with me about making a really unusual and special collection of jewellery for his family. He asked me to think about designs for a family talisman, something that symbolises the unity and strength of the five family members. The idea was to make a simple piece of jewellery, something solid with five stands to it to represent each family member so that they could carry it physically with them for the rest of their lives as his children break away to forge their own individual paths. Kevin wondered if a spinning top might work. I loved the idea, saw it as something that reminds you that you are always together even if the world seems to be spinning.
I started working on designs for the spinning tops and how to adapt them into suitable pieces of jewellery for each family member. We decided on keychains for Kevin and Cormac, necklaces for Gillian and Ciara and a charm for Laura to put on her bracelet. Each spinning top would be detachable so that it could be used as a functional spinning top. For the design of the top itself, I came up with a very simple spinning top design and divided the main body of the top into five spokes. I hollow formed them out of silver and stamped an initial on the inside of each spoke. A narrow spindle and a small spike at the base completed the design.
This was one of the nicest projects I’ve ever worked on and I’m happy to say everyone loved their gifts from Kevin on Christmas morning.
